Wow! Another hard hearted SOB.
So yesterday I was privileged to award the first 908 Straight St! Know Your Enemy Award to Representative Joe Barton of Texas who, hopefully, will be the Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. When it rains, it pours.
Today, I am privileged to award the second 908 Straight St! Know Your Enemy Award, this time to Representative Jerry Lewis of California who is hustling to get an extension so he can Chair the House Appropriations Committee.
Now then, let me be clear about this. There is some pain in this award because Lewis happens to be one of Congress’ top porkers. I doubt the guy has ever met an ear he didn’t want to mark. But hey, that was then, this is now. Lewis – unlike Dick Lugar – is not tone deaf. Or stupid. Lugar is both. Or maybe he’s just senile. But anyway, Lewis is stepping up and is calling an enemy the enemy. And that’s what this award is all about. From Politico…
The California Republican [Lewis] vying for the gavel of the powerful spending panel sent a letter Monday to the Environmental Protection Agency chief Lisa Jackson warning that the GOP-led House plans to strip funding for agency regulations and conduct “unprecedented levels of oversight,” with a particular focus on the administration’s climate change policies.
“In addition to scrutinizing the agency’s entire FY 2012 budget, with particular attention on the agency’s rulemaking process, the House Appropriations Committee will be exercising its prerogative to withhold funding for prospective EPA regulations and de-fund through the rescissions process many of those already on the books,” wrote Lewis, who chaired the spending panel in 2005 and 2006.
In less polite words, Lewis is putting the EPA on notice that Appropriations will take an axe to their funds. This is especially important coming at the beginning of the next Congress for a couple of reasons. First of all, the Democratic Congress that is going away in a month has not passed a budget for the current fiscal year. All spending bills must come from the House so Republicans will have control – or at least some control – of the purse strings. The second reason is that Obama is being encouraged by the Left to forget the legislative process and govern by executive order and by regulators. Pretty much the only process to stop that is through a strong Appropriations committee.
I should also note that there are two other Representatives who are vying for the Chairmanship of Appropriations, Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) and Hal Rogers (R-Ky.), and they both appear to be of like mind with Lewis on this issue.
EPA chief Lisa Jackson is not a happy camper and is invoking the last refuges of scoundrels…
Jackson warned yesterday that the GOP’s attacks on the Obama administration’s climate regulations could threaten public health.
“The environment is not a partisan issue,” she said. “It shouldn’t be.”
Got that? It’s for the children and bipartisanship is important.
